If you’re a single mum with kids on school holidays, you’ve probably more than once been shocked to learn that you’re not a family – at least in the eyes of organisations selling tickets. It starts off well enough; you’re booking tickets for the zoo, a show, or an activity, and you’re happy to see they offer a Family Pass at a discount. You jump online to book tickets and then you see the words: Family Pass – 2 Adults + 2 Children
It’s an issue that really irks us at CSMC. Family tickets are everywhere – museums, zoos, aquariums, sporting events, festivals, attractions and holiday activities – but so often, “family” is defined as two adults and two children. Yep, if you’re a two-parent family you get a discount. If you’re a single parent family, it’s full price for you!
It’s not just discriminatory, it doesn’t make sense! Single parent families, often managing on one income while juggling absolutely everything else, often need that discount more a two-income family.
No one’s suggesting two-parent families shouldn’t receive affordable pricing, we just think it should be applied to all family types.
This is actually an easy problem to fix: shall we do it?
CSMC is considering launching an email campaign encouraging museums, zoos, sporting venues, cinemas, festivals, theme parks and other attractions to introduce pricing that offers single parent Family Passes. We’re thinking an email campaign, followed by a list of single mother friendly places on our website.
But first, we want to know if this is an issue that irks you too, and if you would take part in an email campaign? Let us know!
Would you join an email campaign to lobby organisations to offer single mother Family Passes?
Also, a big shoutout!
We would love to call out the organisations who offer one-parent Family Passes, so a huge thank you to Winter Wonderlights at Sovereign Hill, which has been offering Family Passes for single parent families for a number of years!
Do you know an event or attraction that offers one-parent Family Passes? Let us know by emailing coms@csmc.org.au.
