Resources & services for young people growing up in single mother families

CSMC’s ground-breaking report, ‘To Be Seen and Heard: Report on young people raised in single mother households’, captured the voices of young people growing up in single mother families, importantly, telling us what they need to feel supported and assist them to thrive.

Here are some resources and services that support young people.

General info for young people

  • Youth Central is the Victorian Government’s website for young Victorians aged 12—25 with lots of information and resources on a variety of topics in the one place.

Housing

  • Front Yard provides multidisciplinary holistic programs to meet the needs of young people aged 12 to 24 who are at risk of or experiencing homelessness.

Mental health & support

  • Headspace can support mental health and wellbeing in a number of different ways.
  • Kids Helpline are available to listen without judgement to any issue from big questions to tiny worries.

Sexual health

  • Sexual Health Victoria embrace diversity and welcome everyone of all genders, sex, age, cultural background, sexual orientation, religion and ability.
  • 1800 My Options is free and confidential and can be contacted by any young person looking for contraception, pregnancy options, abortion and sexual health services.

Drug and alcohol

Employment & Learning

  • LLENs build connections between young people, schools, employers, families, the government, and the wider community, mostly through Structured Working Place Learning (SWL) placements and work experience.
  • The L2P Program helps eligible Victorian learner drivers gain driving experience required for a probationary licence.
  • myfuture provides resources to explore career pathways and tools to develop self-knowledge to help with career decision-making. 
  • DFFH Student Scholarship Program for students living in social housing and doing VCE.
  • Kids Under Cover Scholarships Program helps to nurture the potential of young people by offering financial support that can re-engage them with education or training; or help take their studies to the next level.

Rights & legal

  • Young Workers Centre is a one-stop-shop for young workers who want to learn more about their rights at work or who need assistance in resolving workplace issues. 
  • Youth Law is a free statewide community legal centre providing assistance to young people in Victoria.
