Inquiry into Melbourne Public Housing Redevelopment

Why the voices of single mothers must be heard

A Parliamentary Inquiry is underway in Victoria, investigating the Victorian Government’s decision to redevelop 44 public housing towers in Melbourne. It comes on the heels of Homelessness Australia releasing new data, which paints a stark picture of growing need for safe and secure housing for women and children.

Homelessness Australia’s latest snapshot shows a sharp 20 per cent rise in the number of women and girls who were already without a home when they sought help, since the current government came to power. The statistics also show that those on the verge of homelessness increased by eight per cent.

According to the analysis, the surge reflects the combined pressures of soaring rents, domestic violence, and inadequate early-intervention measures, which have left many women and families in crisis.

The Parliamentary Inquiry into the redevelopment of the public housing towers will explore the rationale and cost of demolition versus alternatives like refurbishment, the impact on public housing residents, and the relocation of residents. It will also assess the adequacy of consultations with residents, stakeholders, and government entities, and evaluate the proposed financial and legal models.

As part of the inquiry, building standards, integration of different housing models, and the impacts on bedroom availability, public and community housing numbers, the Victorian Housing Register, and homelessness will also be reviewed.

The Inquiry will lead to significant changes to how public housing is provided, and in this video, Jenny Davidson, CEO of CSMC, discusses why the voices of single mothers need to be heard.
