Maryam’s Brilliant Idea

Sep 8, 2025

Maryam has a business idea that she knows could profoundly benefit her community, but the pressures of sole parenting and household responsibilities, combined with limited financial resources, is making that dream unattainable – and she knows she is not alone.

Maryam’s Brilliant Idea involves the development of a program that would support single mothers who want to start their own businesses.

Current Problem/Situation

I am a registered mental health nurse seeking to establish an independent business to deliver mental health supports within the community. Establishing such a business requires the development of policies, procedures, and compliance frameworks, all of which are essential but financially costly.

For first-time business owners, these expenses present a significant barrier. As a single mother managing childcare responsibilities alongside part-time work, I do not have the financial or time capacity to independently fund and develop these requirements.

Impact on Single Mothers

This challenge extends beyond my individual circumstances and reflects a broader issue faced by single mothers. Many women are highly skilled and wish to enter or re-enter the workforce by creating independent businesses. However, the dual pressures of sole parenting and household responsibilities, combined with limited financial resources, significantly restrict their capacity to develop business structures or invest in professional support. As a result, women with valuable skills are often unable to achieve economic independence, and the community loses potential small business innovation and growth.

Proposed Idea and Benefits

I propose the development of increased funding and structured support programs specifically designed to assist single mothers in establishing businesses. This support would reduce the upfront financial and administrative burden of business compliance and allow women to focus on applying their professional skills. By enabling single mothers to establish sustainable businesses, this initiative would:

  • Promote financial independence and stability for women and their families.
  • Facilitate re-entry into the workforce for skilled professionals.
  • Create employment opportunities for other women, particularly in flexible, part-time, and casual positions.
  • Contribute to broader community wellbeing through service delivery and economic participation.

Requirements for Implementation

To bring this idea to fruition, the following would be required:

  • Targeted funding programs to cover start-up costs, policy development, and compliance frameworks.
  • Access to business development support such as mentorship, training, and professional advisory services.
  • Provision of ready-made business frameworks tailored to sectors such as health and community services, reducing the burden of compliance on new business owners.
  • Ongoing support mechanisms to ensure long-term sustainability, growth, and job creation.

This initiative would empower single mothers to establish viable businesses, enhance workforce participation, and generate wider social and economic benefits.

Awesome idea. I also think businesses should get incentives to structure roles to enable single mothers/working mothers to work during school hours, where it is practical. There are a lot of roles that working mums could do with no disadvantage to the business but there isn’t any incentive for them to do it so they don’t even consider doing it. The workplace could be a lot friendlier to working mums.
