What could be better than a group of talented and passionate female artists coming together to celebrate women, music and art? When they donate money raised to support the work of CSMC!
That’s exactly what happened at the Sound for Change event, which was held in May to recognise prevention of family and domestic violence month and raise funds for CSMC.
Event organiser and singer/songwriter EEMA hosted this impactful event on Saturday 16 May in St Kilda with four female support acts and a female artist, Melbourne-based Congolese visual artist Mukisa, exhibiting in the gallery.
EEMA performed her own music. “Sound for Change was created from my own healing journey through music and art,” she explains. “I wanted to create a space that raises awareness around family and domestic violence, while bringing people together through honest conversations and creativity.”
The decision to support CSMC, she says, was a deeply personal one.
“I chose to support the Council of Single Mothers and their Children because CSMC supported me and my son when we were displaced as a result of family and domestic violence. I deeply value the work you do in supporting women and children, and I wanted to give back in a meaningful way.”
At the event, Artful Yoga Gallery owner Neha spoke about her mother, who raised her as a single mother and to whom she dedicates her gallery and yoga studio.
With sessions on coercive control and reflections on experiences of family and domestic violence, the event ranged from inspirational to informative.
The talented and diverse female support acts were Safya, Czarina, Markoe and Shannon Jane.
One hundred per cent of ticket proceeds were donated to CSMC, supported whole-heartedly by all participating artists who donated their time and talent. Sound for Change raised $1,055, which will go directly to supporting single mothers and their children when they need it the most.
Mukisa also donated 30 per cent from the sale of her art to CSMC, another amazingly generous act.
“The day was all about recognising the resilience and the journey of recovery that single mothers are often doing, and the community support that makes all the difference,” says CSMC CEO Jenny Davidson. “I want to very much thank EEMA, Neha, all the artists who shared their art with such generosity, as well as everyone who participated in this special day.”
