Housing Co-ops
Run by members, for members
- 12% of housing cooperatives in Australia are funded by members’ private equity. The remainder have received funding from either a state or territory government or from the Australian government to buy or build properties that are then rented to co-op members at affordable rates—at least less than 75% of the market rate.
- Housing cooperatives exist across Australia, with the majority in the most populous states (NSW and Victoria) and the remainder in the other states and territories.
- Members live in separate dwellings but actively participate in the management and running of the housing co-op as a whole.
