This webinar will provide legal information on how the system is structured, what you can do when it is not working for you, and where to get more help.
Hundreds of thousands of Australian families have child support in place, but for many single mothers it is not working well. Payments are late, part-paid or not received. Personal unpaid child support debts are can range into tens of thousands. Nationally, the official child support debt is $1.7 billion, and the real figure is much higher. Many families have agreed child support amounts that are far below the costs of raising children. The system is complex and there are many loopholes that payers can exploit.
One tool that single mothers have is to better understand their rights and what recourses they have when their agreement is not working for their family.
Victoria Legal Aid helps people with their legal problems. They receive many inquiries about child support, as does our Support Line.
Please send any questions you might like covered to policy@csmc.org.au, including your postcode and if you already head an agreement in place.
Please note that individual legal advice cannot be provided.
