Raising a child with developmental delay or autism can come with extra questions, challenges and a lot of navigating services. This month, new Thriving Kids supports are being introduced in Victoria to help families access information, assessments and practical support. Here’s what’s available now, what’s coming next, and what it could mean for you and your child.
Some supports have been available since 1 October, including:
- Practical information and guidance to help families navigate available services.
- More publicly funded autism assessments for eligible children aged eight and under, with a focus on families who may need additional support.
- More places in the Strengthening Parent Support Program, helping parents build skills, confidence and connections.
- Expanded training for kindergarten staff to help identify and respond to developmental concerns.
What’s coming next?
From January 2027, six Victorian sites in Bendigo, Hobsons Bay, Hume, Loddon, Maribyrnong and Melton are scheduled to begin providing targeted allied health and other supports for some children to develop everyday skills and independence.
Two new developmental checks are also planned for all children — one when they start kindergarten and another before school. These will be carried out by allied health professionals and trained clinicians.
The full range of Thriving Kids services is scheduled to be in place by 1 January 2028.
What about the NDIS?
There will be no changes to how children with developmental delay or autism access the NDIS until 1 January 2028.
We know navigating services and finding the right support can be challenging, particularly when you’re managing family life on one income. Understanding what’s available, when it will be introduced and how to access it can help you plan ahead.
CSMC will continue to share information that helps single mums understand the supports available to their families.
There are also a lot of information and resources on the Thriving Kids website.
